  • Grand Motel resident Leroy Williams, 76, has been a resident for nine years, spending most of his time in room 113. A retired military sergeant Williams has seen the transformation of the Grand Motel. "When I first came here, the windows were knocked out, prostitutes were on the property. There was counterfitters," he said. Williams is part of a larger portion of South Carolinians who have simplified their lives due to the poor economy. galmh.12/20/10

  • The late Odo Mundel Sexton would spend much of his free time with "Sugar," one of many Chihuahuas he rescued throughout his life. Sugar was faithful, waiting for him to come home before she would eat. As Odo played cards with the neighborhood children one last time in late June, Sugar was by his side, guarding him. Odo would pass on July 11.

  • Mary Freeman played paddy cake with one her many cats as she sat on her couch inside her mill-era home on Texas Street. Freeman used to sell Avon in the community. The 93-year-old longtime Olympia resident raised four sons and lived throughout the area, on Texas, Dover, Maryland and Virginia Street, taking care of her children and providing a safe haven for other kids in the neighborhood. Today, cats are her family, keeping her company throughout the day. "Lay down now," she said to one of her older cats. "Go sleepy baby, sleepy baby."

  • A shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe was set up outside a home on Bluff road. The Virgin is the Mother of all Mexicans, protectress of all the poor and a constant guardian. As each December approaches, Mexicans throughout the world pay tribute to her. The Virgin was adorned by lights and angels. Inside the two-story home Alicia Tapia Cervantez, left, 2, and Diana Tapia, 6 looked out their window. More Hispanic families are moving into Olympia and calling the area home thus changing the area's landscape.

  • Steven Mills moved to Olympia 10 years ago. Born in Florence, he now resides in the mill town making ends meet through a variety of jobs. Some of the mill homes are in dire need of repair and Mills hopes to earn enough money to begin fixing his home.

  • Helen Sexton unfurled her American Flag and hung it below her house number. She is 89 years now. Helen raised seven children in a shotgun house on Bells Bottom. Back then it was considered one of the poorest areas in Olympia Mill Village. She worked long hours at the mill. “I didn’t raise my children, the good Lord raised them,” she said. “Cuz I worked at the mill from seven in the morning to 11 at night.” Sexton has witnessed many changes to Olympia. “I don’t know the names of any of my neighbors anymore,” she said. “Just family for me now.”
